Computer Experts (UK) Ltd (www.computerexperts.co.uk),
one of the world leader's in the field of PC
hardware millennium compliance announced in
mid November of last year a significant breakthrough
in the war against the Millennium Bug. The latest
version of its award winning Millennium Bug
Toolkit is the first on the market to change
in the PC's real time clock on the roll over
precisely - as opposed to other fixes, which
either pre empt the roll over or first dip into
1900 before changing the year to 2000.
Should a PC be allowed to dip into 1900 - even
if only a fraction of a second - there will
be an inevitable delay before the real time
clock obtains the correct date, a fact which
can cause any number of problems.
"The truly scary thing about the Millennium
Bug is its unpredictability" comments Ian Partington
managing director of Computer Experts (UK).
"There is simply no telling what problems one
errant bit of data will cause when introduced
into an ordinary PC. It could no nothing, or
it could cause the machine to crash - depending
on the exact set of circumstances at that specific
time. There have already been cases recorded
of substantial data loss resulting from the
Millennium Bug - and data corruption in almost
certain to result. Even in a period as small
as 55 milliseconds, a Pentium processor has
the opportunity to supply an incorrect date
to any number of programmes millions of times.
We simply do not know what effect this will
have." The revolutionary breakthrough comes
from Computer Experts" remarkable ability to
break down the standard 55 millisecond barrier
experienced by most software fixes. When Partington
was told by his engineers that they had achieved
zero latency, he was amazed.
"I had been working on this problem for months
and like all other Y2K specialists, I had assumed
that the 55 millisecond barrier was unbreakable,"
recalls Partington. "When my engineers proudly
boasted that they broken the barrier, I lost
a bet which cost me an entire evening's drinks"
